Sheriff’s Department offers safety reminders to pedestrians, motorists
From Staff Reports
Just a few weeks into 2014, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Apple Valley station says its making roadway safety — especially as it relates to pedestrians — a top priority.
During 2013, Apple Valley station deputies responded to 14 traffic collisions, according to a sheriff’s news release. Five of those collisions resulted in the deaths of the pedestrians involved.
Officials say they hope to see a decrease in those collision numbers throughout the coming year by focusing on safety.
In addition, station officials said drivers and pedestrians who don’t obey traffic rules should expect to be cited.
For pedestrians, the sheriff’s department offered the following guidelines:
• Walk on sidewalks when provided;
• If there is no sidewalk, walk in the dirt or the furthest to your right as possible;
• Walk facing traffic so you can observe if a vehicle is drifting into your space;
• Cross roads at designated crosswalks;
• If you have to walk at night, wear light colored clothing so its easier for motorists to see you.
The sheriff’s department said motorists should observe the following guidelines:
• Drive the appropriate speed for conditions, including being able to stop at traffic signals on roadways with higher speed limits, such as Highway 18;
• Obey traffic laws;
• Be watchful of individuals walking alongside the roadway.
Officials encourage anyone who observes a dangerous situation, such as someone who appears to be driving or walking under the influence, a person walking in the roadway or attempting to cross illegally at a dangerous location, to contact law enforcement immediately.
