Conference Center hosting workshop for teen drivers

From Staff Reports

The next round of the California Highway Patrol’s Start Smart class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Apple Valley Conference Center at 14975 Dale Evans Parkway.

The CHP’s Victorville office currently offers the two-hour class to High Desert residents on a monthly basis. The class is made available to teens, accompanied by a parent, at no cost.

In an effort to reach Apple Valley citizens and possibly accommodate more schedules, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Apple Valley Station teamed up with the CHP to make this class available in Apple Valley. Classes began earlier this year.

Class topics include safe driving habits, tips to avoid collisions, dynamics of a collision, consequences of poor choices behind the wheel of a vehicle, testimonies of people tragically impacted by incidents involving teen drivers, parental roles and responsibilities, legal ramifications and civil liabilities affecting teenage drivers and their parents.

Some automobile insurance companies may offer a discount for teens who attend a Start Smart class. For more information, call Apple Valley Station spokeswoman Karen Hunt at 760-240-7400, ext. 7457.
