Brewster Center to host five more weekends of youth soccer tournaments

Lenny Brewster Sports Center will host the Cal South State Cup Soccer Tournaments that bring youths from all over Southern California to Apple Valley.

The town will host tournaments continuing on the following weekends: Saturday and Sunday; Feb. 14 and 15; April 11 and 12, and 18 and 19. The American Youth Soccer Association Coyote Classic is played Feb. 7 and 8.

Attendance each weekend is expected to average 3,000 to 5,000 people, town officials say, and local businesses traditionally see a spike in foot traffic during the tournaments.

Dog obedience course continues Saturday

The town’s seven-week dog obedience training workshop continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at Corwin Park. Animal training specialist and Claudia Wolff leads the course, which costs $98.

Classes will cover everything from teaching your dog to follow basic commands to more advanced obedience techniques.

Dogs that participate in the training will learn to walk on a leash, as well as to respond to commands like sit, stay, lay down and come when called. Additionally, pet owners will be instructed on techniques for house-breaking their dogs, as well as teaching them how to sit still when being bathed or groomed.

In order to qualify to attend the workshop, dogs must be current on all of their vaccines, including rabies. Owners are required to bring their vaccination records to the first class.

Along with the weekly dog obedience training classes, the town will offer drop-in classes on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon for those who cannot commit to the entire seven weeks.

These classes will run from Saturday through March 14. The cost for each session is $14 and can be paid on site.

Corwin Park is at 18577 Corwin Road. For more information or to register for the workshop, visit www.applevalley.org or call Claudia Wolff at 760-298-1369. Walk-in registration will be accepted at the Town Hall, 14955 Dale Evans Parkway.

ABC’s of Water to present water education session

Mojave Water Agency will present an ABC’s of Water topic from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 24, “Careers and Education Opportunities in Water.”

Whether you are in high school, college, a teacher, a parent of a student or already employed in the water industry, this session could be beneficial for you.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP soon as seating is limited.

To register, email Gloria Golike at ggolike@mojavewater.org or call her at 760-946-7001.

The session will be presented at 13846 Conference Center Drive in Apple Valley. Refreshments will be served.
