
RIMS Science Fair to be held at National Orange Show

In the name of science, 232 students gathered to showcase their outstanding projects at the 32nd Annual Apple Valley Unified School District Science Fair, held at Granite Hills High School. Students from represented each of AVUSD’s 14 school sites.
Throughout the morning, judges viewed and scored over 200 projects, which were displayed in the GHHS gymnasium. When they weren't presenting their work, students attended hands-on learning workshops, including a CPR course and a demonstration by the Mojave River Watershed Group.
A 7 p.m. awards ceremony, emceed by Granite Hills’ principal, Charles (Chuck) McCall, was held to honor the students’ achievements. Ranging from fourth to 12th grades, 15 students were selected to advance to the RIMS (Riverside, Indio, Mono and San Bernardino County) Science Fair, which will be held at the National Orange Show in April. • Human vs. Robot by Deanna Schafer, 6th grade-Yucca Loma Elementary School
• Natural antibiotics vs. Synthetic antibiotics by Fatimah Bari, 6th grade- Vanguard Preparatory School
• Electrify Me by Sierra Franco, 7th grade-Sitting Bull Academy
• The abstraction of the placebo effect on logical contemplation and concentration by Gabriel Reder, 7th grade- Vanguard Preparatory School

• The Effects of Hexavalent Chromium on Vigna Radiata Root System Architecture & Growth by Ritika Sahai, Apple Valley High School
• The Effects of Temperature on Exoelectrogenic Bacteria with Applications to Microbial Fuel Cell Performance by Akshay Srivastava, Apple Valley High School
• Finding the Most Efficient Anode and Cathode Pair for Exoelectrogenic Microbial Batteries by Neena Mohan, Apple Valley High School
Although not eligible to advance to the county science fair, outstanding kindergarten-3rd grade projects were also recognized, including:
• Static Electricity by Austin Roelle, Kindergarten
• Fresh Apples by Joshua Meyer, 1st grade
• Waterproof Sock by Alyssa Bright, 2nd grade
• Pocket Rocks by Trevor Buzzard, 2nd grade
• Which Metal is More Conductive? by Marley Watkins, 3rd grade
• It Sounds Shocking by Christopher Crane, 3rd grade
Other awards, including community awards, were presented.
The RIMS (Riverside, Indio, Mono and San Bernardino County) Science Fair will be held April 7 at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino. Projects will be available for public viewing and an award ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Students from across the county will be selected to represent their projects at the California State Science Fair on May 18 and 19 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
