Apple Valley Review

Creative expression takes center stage every Wednesday at Maggie Vee’s Open Mic Night. Singer/songwriters and spoken word artists from across the Victor Valley get the opportunity to showcase their talents before a live audience.

Vee, a vocalist who performs and tours with the band Soul Pattern Project, said it’s a compelling entertainment experience area residents don’t want to miss.

“We get a really mixed bag of performers and it’s always very entertaining,” said Vee. “Audiences never know what to expect, so that makes it extra fun and exciting.”

Vee’s been hosting her Open Mic Nights for about seven years and has held them at different High Desert venues. She said D’Vine Wine & Jazz seems to be the most conducive to her format.

“It takes a unique place to hold an open mic night,” said Vee, referring to D'Vine Wine & Jazz in Victorville. Vee has performed at countless locations in the Victor Valley, including the Wine Seller in Apple Valley and the former Doghouse Saloon in Hesperia. “D’Vine Wine & Jazz is perfect for it and provides an intimate atmosphere that fits in very well with this type of entertainment.”

According to Vee, her event draws people with a variety of skill levels. Some, she said, are just getting started and want a place to test out their work. Others are seasoned pros and are looking for a chance to showcase their best material.

Each week, seven or eight artists perform two to three songs or spoken word pieces. Vee said songwriters may be accompanied by no more than two instruments. Backing tracks are prohibited.

“I have nothing against tracks but for an open mic night, I think people want to hear live playing,” Vee said.

For those looking to connect with other musicians, songwriters or performing artists, Vee believes her Open Mic Night is the ideal place to do so. She said the networking aspect of it is just as important as the entertainment element.

“I’ve seen many collaborations come out of these nights,” said Vee. “And everyone is so supportive of each other. The value of what we’re doing is evident on several levels, as well.

“It provides an environment for singer/songwriters and spoken word artists to perform who may not be working at the moment. They have a stage in which to present material to their peers and also get feedback from the audience members. It also provides an outlet for their creative spirit and preparation for their future work.”

In addition to featuring local talent, guest artists also appear from time to time at Vee’s events. To sign up for inclusion in an upcoming showcase, send an email with your request along with biographical information to Vee at mailmags1@gmail.com. Contact Vee by phone at 760-684-9093.

The next showcase will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is free to the open mic nights at D’Vine Wine & Jazz, 14845 Monarch Blvd. in Victorville.
