Aquatics events, singing competitions, fireworks coming to town

Summer’s almost here and lucky for locals, the Town of Apple Valley has plenty of warm weather fun planned for residents of all ages.

Dive-in Movies

Movie goers will surely enjoy this unique opportunity to watch a first-rate film while lounging in the pool. Showtime is at 7:45 p.m. and includes “Inside Out” on June 11, “Guardians of the Galaxy” on July 23 and “Zootopia” on August 13.

The Town suggests bringing your own noodles or lawn chairs. There will be food trucks at the event offering a variety of refreshments. Pre-registration is $3 per person and must be paid by the Thursday prior to showing. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Overnight Pool Parties

Experience a one-of-a-kind camping adventure during Apple Valley’s Overnight Pool Parties, which will be held June 24 and July 15. Along with open swimming all night long, the activity also will feature scavenger hunts, games, water slides and contests. Food trucks will be at the events offering dinner, snacks and breakfast.

The cost is $10 per person if pre-paid one week in advance. After that, registration is $12 per person. There will be no on-site registration. Children under 3 are free.

Apple Valley Idol

Calling all young talent! Apple Valley Idol is back for its 14th season and will give local singers ages 8 to 17 a chance to compete for a variety of prizes, including the chance to perform at the Town’s Freedom Festival on July 4.

Those wishing to be a part of the event must register no later than June 15. Contestants also will be required to attend a rehearsal on June 22 in order to be accepted into for the competition.

Winners will be chosen by a distinguished panel of judges and the top three in each age group will receive an award.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event at no charge.

Freedom Festival

Celebrate America’s birthday on the 4th of July at the Town of Apple Valley’s 18th Annual Freedom Festival. The celebration begins at 2 p.m. at the Lenny Brewster Sports Center, 21024 Otoe Road. Parking and admission are free.

Along with live entertainment, the event will feature a giant area for kids complete with bounce houses, free games and craft. At 9 p.m., the largest fireworks display in the High Desert will begin.

Sunset Concert Series

This popular music series at Civic Center Park will offer seven outdoor concerts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays beginning June 23. Attendees must bring their own seating. No pets, alcohol or smoking will be allowed.

The event kicks off on June 23 with Phat Cat Swinger. Stone Soul is set to appear on July 7 and The Silverados will take the stage on July 14. Ronnie & the Classics will appear on July 21, Phoenix Rising on July 28, Neon Nation on August 4 and Southern Spirit on August 11.
